Fire & Water - Cleanup & Restoration

Where Do Your Possessions Go When SERVPRO Takes Them Off-Site?

Sometimes, when your home experiences fire damage, the remediation of specific objects cannot occur in your house. For various reasons, your belongings may be taken to a separate cleaning facility to ensure that they are dried sufficiently and swiftly. Off-site cleaning and restoration are commonly used for objects that are difficult to clean on-site, such as paintings and other artwork. While at these facilities, SERVPRO cares for your valuables as if they are our own and make sure they receive the best treatment possible.

Trisha, of SERVPRO of La Porte, explains what different rooms in the facility are used for as she walks through them. In the first, she comments, "This is our contents room. This is where we do all the cleaning for anything that comes in from a fire or a water damage." In the background, a fellow employee is using a cleaning solution on a wooden piece of furniture to take ash and soot off of the surface. After a fire happens in your home, it is essential to begin cleaning as quickly as possible. The longer smoke-residue stays on the surface that it has attached itself to, the more difficult it becomes to remove it.

Trisha moves onto explain that the next room is used for air drying. A lot of people do not realize that water damage can be caused by firefighting efforts to both your furniture and your home. "And laundry contents, or any hard contents such as furniture, it goes all in this room, where we let it air dry."

For objects that have sustained fire damage, our SERVPRO techs move them to the next room once they have been sufficiently dried. "This is where we put all of our items that need to run through the ozone- that's only fire items- and this helps get the smell out of it." Ozone machines work by neutralizing the foul odor that fires cause on a particle level. Once the items that we brought to our SERVPRO facility from your home are dried and scent-free, we can return them to you.
